I would like to share with you one of my “good” habits that I practise daily: I write a gratitude diary every night before I go to bed. For those of you who have never heard of it, it´s quite simply a pretty A4 copybook, where I jot down ten things that I´m grateful for each day. I´ve been doing it now for over three years and when I started out it was just three things, then I upped it to five and now I´m at ten! It doesn´t take long once you get into the habit. In fact, it takes me about 5 minutes, possibly because I am now consciously aware during the day of the things that I am or should be grateful for. It could be something as simple as a smile from one of my kids when I´m stressed, or my yoga teacher giving an amazing class, or something as obvious as my legs, after just seeing someone in a wheelchair. The list is endless and individual for each one of us.
The reason I´m sharing this “good” habit with you is to encourage you to try it out and do the same. If you don´t want to commit to writing it down, that´s fine. Just start by challenging yourself to think about it at different stages during the day. You will be amazed how it changes your outlook on things for the better.
There are numerous studies that point out the advantages, for example: you become more self-aware; your stress levels decrease; you go to sleep on a more positive note and you will see more clearly what benefits you. In essence it´s an antidote to negative emotions!
We have so much to be grateful for. The thing is we don´t stop to appreciate it. So I´ll leave it out there. If you´re curious, give it a try, you´ve nothing to lose.
One day or day one. You decide!
